We are the Murillo family, third generation Australians, who migrated from the Phillipines in 1984. We are particularly proud to be a Gold Coast based manufacturer, and feel a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility to ensure our product and service offerings meet the best possible Australian standards.
Whilst most other suppliers offer “discounts” (which usually means cutting corners and quality), our focus remains the same – let cheap importers be cheap, and quality locally manufactured continue to be quality. That said, we are competitively priced for the quality and standards that we offer.

Our Family Story
Originating from a modest lifestyle in Cebu, Phillipines, the Murillo family migrated to Australia in 1984 in hopes of a better lifestyle for their family’s three generations.
In Gold Coast, 2001, Ed Murillo and his family launched Apex Shutters & Blinds to fill a noticeable void in the marketplace for a niche clientele seeking locally made, environmentally responsible, premium quality shutters, with flexible, reliable and timely customer service.
Today, we have established a reputation for delivering products for the workplace, hospitality and high-end residential sectors. We’ve earned the trust of some of the biggest clients by ensuring they consistently receive great service from our team. And we continue to foster the spirit of innovation through our collaborations with local designers, decorators, architects and developers.
Apex Shutters continues to grow, but at our core, we stay true to our simple values: local, flexible, reliable, and transparent.
We are a third-generation family-run local business. Our passion for craftsmanship, design and fine materials hails from our parents and grandparents. My father was one of the founders of a successful manufacturing business in the Philippines and continued that business on the Gold Coast.
Our factory in Carrara is compact but well appointed with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, and we produce a remarkable quantity of products for clients. Our tradesmen are highly trained and passionate. Each project is handcrafted from bespoke components and of an exceptional quality that guarantees they will last for many years.
Coming from a humble background we understand the importance of helping others in need, struggling, and those individuals or families living in poverty and we are proud of the community support we provide.

Asher Murillo
A true artist, a dedicated craftsman, and a beloved father.
It is with profound sadness and heartfelt respect that we remember Asher Murillo, a visionary in the world of furniture design and restoration.
Asher dedicated his entire career to the craft he loved, founding and operating Design Cane Studio Developments. With unmatched expertise in manufacturing and specialising in cane furniture, Asher provided exceptional design and restoration services throughout his life.
Cane furniture, known for its ability to capture the essence of the tropical climate and Asian influences of Australasia, was Asher’s medium of choice. His creations have adorned countless homes, adding elegance and a touch of the tropics to both interiors and exteriors. Under his guidance, Design Cane Studio Developments also catered to resorts and commercial clients, offering bespoke packages that highlighted Asher’s dedication to quality and style.
Asher’s legacy extends beyond his own remarkable achievements. His creative passion inspired all five of his sons to pursue the art of furniture design. Two of his sons have taken the family’s artistic tradition to international heights, operating an award-winning furniture design company in the Philippines. Here on the Gold Coast, his other two sons have been instrumental in building and expanding the family business. Notably, Ed Murillo, who ventured into the world of timber shutters and blinds in 2001, has since established Apex Shutters and Blinds, continuing the family tradition of excellence in design and craftsmanship.
Asher Murillo’s life and work have left an indelible mark on the world of furniture design. His legacy lives on through the beauty of his creations and the continued success of his sons. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit and passion for design will forever inspire those who knew him and those who experience his work.
